WALTER RALEGH'S VIRGINIA
- Roanoke Island and the Lost Colony
by ALECK LOKER
In 1585—22 years before the founding of James- town—Sir Walter Ralegh sent a fleet of five ships and a contingent of 300 would-be colonists to North America. This was a private venture, though it had the blessing of Queen Elizabeth, who provided modest financial support. Having established their settlement at Roanoke Island, the British colonists would soon find their supply lines to England entirely cut off by the Spanish Armada. In the end, Ralegh's settlement simply disappeared, in what remains one of the most tantalizing mysteries of American history.
